Welcome to my work in progress!
The aim of this project is to produce some artists impressions of what the new sanctuary renovations might look like when the first phase is completed and the new furniture is insitu. As the work moves along, I'll update this page with all the changing drawings to hlep you see real-time how a project like this is approached and undertaken.
In total we are aiming to produce two full size paintings and three smaller graphite drawings.
February 19th 2008
Firstly, I took a hundred or so photos from lots of different angles, up from the west end gallery, from within the congregational seating area, and up in the organ loft looking down into the sanctuary to work out the best composition. It had to be one which gave people the best idea of what the new additions would look like in the whole context of the nave. It had to be taken from a little above to show the new elevated area nicely without to much foreshortening as the floor level would rise considerably in relation to the viewer.
Next I had to enlarge the chosen image for the first composition to the desired size for the final paintng - 44 cm x 56 cm. Then I traced up just the surrounding structure that would always be visible, found my vanishing point for the main perspective (not easy with bending camera lenses - they lie!) and set about inventing the elevation and the new sanctuary furniture as specified by the Cathedral and the architects plans.
There are lots of design issues to be looked at and this drawing will probably go through some changes. It was done specifically on a very hard smooth paper which allows lots of reworking without marking. So while not nice and toothy and smudgy, it forgives numerous reworkings.
I'll keep you posted...
